John Carmack talks with the guys over at GameInformer.com about Rage and id Tech 5, the engine on which it’s being built. The interview itself is very insightful, explaining why id Software decided to “branch out” from the corridor FPS games they have become famous for. He also shares with us that the game currently has a $20 million budget. Here is a short snippet taken from the interview:
It’s official ID Softwares next franchise to be called Rage
![]()
John Carmack today announced that id Software’s latest franchise will be named RAGE. Rage is being built upon id Software’s recently announced idTech 5 engine and promises to have a more open and expansive playing area than previous id shooters.
Rage will have elements of racing, adventure and action in what appears to be a Mad Maxesque post apocalyptic world. Details so far are sketchy, all we know is that the main character will be in a struggle against an oppressive “machine”, and as always it’s your job to sort them out. From the media released so far it seems that racing will play a large part in the game.
Rage will be release simultaneously on the PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox360. As always the current release date is “Done when its done”.

About the game
ID Software has announced at their QuakeCon conference that the company is hard at work on an entirely new title dubbed Rage.
The game is already attracting widespread attention, mostly due to the fact that this is the company famed for creating seminal first person shooter titles Castle Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake. Rage is being developed on id’s new Tech 5 platform and will be released across PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Mac.
The company is claiming the game, which will reportedly fill two DVDs or one Blu-Ray disc and is costing tens of millions of dollars to build, will be a showcase for the new Tech 5 technology – a development platform designed to make cross-platform releases simple.
Details on the actual content of the game are scant although it’s been reported that there will be a heavy emphasis on racing as well as first person shooting. The game’s set 75 years after an apocalypse bringing comet struck the earth where mad max style anarchy reigns.
While you can almost certainly expect oodles of visceral combat, id Software have been keen to emphasise that the game will be a significant departure from their most recent title, Doom 3.
There’s been no announcement as to the game’s release date with the company helpfully assuring that it will be released ‘when it’s finished.
